The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like standard biological terror, but within Together resides a profound examination about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the rural area for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He fears the concept of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that come with most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
